A Microsoft technology for centrally authenticating and managing users on a network.


Antispyware

Computer programs which identify and remove computer Spyware.


Antivirus

Computer programs which can identify and remove a computer Virus.


BITS

Background Intelligent Transfer Service. A Microsoft technology for transfering files between computers using idle bandwidth.


Botnet

BOT NETwork. A collection of compromised Zombie Computers under the instruction of a central host.


COM

Component Object Model. A method of inter-process communication.


Cybercrime

A general term for any activity in which computers, networks, users or data are a target for criminal activity.


DDE

Dynamic Data Exchange. A method of sharing data between applications.


Exploit

Code which takes advantage of a vulnerability in a third party application or resource.


Hacker

A person who engages in activities to gain unauthorized access to a computer or network.


Heuristic Analysis

A method of identifying Malware strains based on common code signatures.


HTTP

Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A communications protocol to transfer public information across the World Wide Web.


HTTPS

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secured. An encrypted communications protocol to transfer private information across the World Wide Web.


IIS

Internet Information Services. A web server technology, developed by Microsoft.


Instant Messaging

A form of real-time communication across the Internet.


Internet

A worldwide network of interconnected computers.


Kernel

The lowest level component of an Operating System.


Keylogger

An application which intercepts keys pressed on a keyboard. A type of Spyware.


Malware

MALicious softWARE. A general term for any form of hostile, intrusive or destructive code.


Microsoft.NET

An application programming framework, developed by Microsoft.


Operating System

An application which manages the resources of a computer, such as Windows XP or Windows Vista.


Peer-to-Peer

An application which allows the transferring of files from one computer to another across the Internet.


Ransomware

A form of Malware which encrypts data belonging to a user, for the purposes of extorting a ransom.


Rootkit

A program which conceals running processes, files, registry and services from the Operating System. Typically used by Malware to hide their presence from Antivirus and Antispyware.


RPC

Remote Procedure Call. A method of inter-process communication.


Sandbox

A tightly controlled set of resources in which applications can run securely.


Spyware

A form of Malware which aims to monitor user behaviour and data without user knowledge or consent.


Trojan

A form of Malware which allows remote access to a computer without user knowledge or consent.


Virtualization

Making a single physical resource appear to function as multiple logical resources.


Virus

A form of Malware which infects a computer and distributes itself to other computers without user knowledge or consent.


Web Browser

An application which allows access to information on the World Wide Web.


Zero-day

An exploit of a vulnerability which has not been publicly disclosed or patched.


Zombie Computer

A computer under the control of a Botnet without user knowledge or consent.
